About David Byers

I did not set out to spend most of my career writing ColdFusion.

Like a lot of long-term CFML developers, I arrived here through a mix of timing, necessity, curiosity, and the realization that ColdFusion lets you build useful things quickly without turning every project into a religious ceremony.

My story with ColdFusion goes back to the early days of building web applications that had to do real work. At a Las Vegas travel agency. I helped build an enterprise e-commerce travel platform that grew from a small online division into a major revenue engine. That was the point where ColdFusion stopped being just a tool I used and became a platform I trusted. It handled the pressure, the deadlines, the integrations, the business logic, and the messy reality of production software.

Since then, ColdFusion has followed me through agencies, startups, payment systems, media organizations, SaaS platforms, payroll systems, and more than a few legacy applications that looked like they were being held together by duct tape, caffeine, and one mysterious scheduled task nobody wanted to touch. I have worked as a developer, architect, CTO, CIO, consultant, and occasional code janitor. The titles changed, but the core work stayed pretty consistent: build things, fix things, modernize things, and try to leave the codebase less cursed than I found it.

ColdFusion has also given me a community. I have been fortunate enough to speak four times at Adobe ColdFusion Summit, sharing lessons from real projects, real production problems, and real attempts to make old and new technology play nicely together. I care about where CFML has been, but I am more interested in where it can go next: cloud infrastructure, Docker, CI/CD, security, AI, better developer tooling, and modern application architecture.

These days, I work with ColdFusion in the places where it matters most: mature systems, business-critical workflows, and applications that cannot afford to stop working just because the code is old enough to rent a car. I still enjoy the language because it remains practical. It solves problems. It gets out of the way. And in the hands of people who respect both the platform and the craft, it is still capable of powering serious software.

I also write about ColdFusion because I think the community benefits when people share what actually happened, not just the polished version. Sometimes that means documenting a useful feature. Sometimes it means walking through an implementation. Sometimes it means pointing at a sharp edge and saying, “Well, that was unpleasant.”

You can find some of my code and experiments on GitHub.

Recognizing that web development was going to be a really, really big deal.

During KOMP's airing of SuperBowl 29, I noticed for the first time that major brands were putting their website addresses on their ads. I realized that the Internet was going to change the world, and developers who could build websites would be in high demand. I approached the Vice President of the radio station and explained that we needed to build websites for the staion.

Going Pro

I switched careers to focus on web development. I started at TripReservations.com. Using the technologies I developed, the company grew from a net loss of $80,000 per year in their online division to revenues exceeding $60 Million annually. I was responsible for the online division of Nevada’s largest travel agency. I architected, designed, and coded the internal and public facing applications that ran the entire division and worked primarily with Adobe ColdFusion.

ColdFusion MX

TripReservations was an early adopter of Macromedia ColdFusion MX and we pushed out a new version of the software on this platform. As it turns out, CFMX 6 was an inferior product, and caused major problems until CFMX 6.1 became available. This turbulence led management to decide to switch development platforms, which ultimately led to my dismissal from the company in 2004.
