Building a Guardrailed AI Translation Pipeline with ColdFusion’s Native AI APIs, Part 4: Translating Long Content Without Losing the Plot

Split long content into manageable pieces, validate each translation, and keep incomplete results out of the database.

In part three, I translated short fields and checked that the model returned the fields and placeholders I asked for. That works nicely for a title. It works less nicely for a page body, which may contain several paragraphs and an author who has never once considered my character limit.

Sending the whole body in one request would make failures harder to diagnose and increase the chance of an incomplete answer. I’m going to split plain text at paragraph boundaries when possible, fall back to whitespace when a paragraph is too long, and validate each translated piece before assembling a candidate. I won’t save a partially translated body. Paying for six successful model calls before the seventh fails is irritating; publishing the first six anyway would be worse.

This article handles plain text, not HTML or Markdown. Translating markup safely is a different problem, and pretending a regular expression has solved it is how future me acquires a drinking problem.

First, extend the tables from part two:

ALTER TABLE site_page
ADD COLUMN body text NOT NULL DEFAULT '';

ALTER TABLE translation_item
DROP CONSTRAINT translation_item_field_name_check;

ALTER TABLE translation_item
ADD CONSTRAINT translation_item_field_name_check
CHECK (field_name IN ('title', 'summary', 'body'));

The constraint name above is the one PostgreSQL assigns to the unnamed check in my part-two table definition. If you named yours differently, use that name.

In translationInventory.cfc, add body to the SELECT inside scanPage():

SELECT
    source_locale,
    title,
    summary,
    body
FROM
    site_page
WHERE
    site_id = CAST(:siteId AS uuid)
    AND id = CAST(:pageId AS uuid)
FOR SHARE

Then replace its fields array with:

var fields = [
    { name: "title", text: page.title },
    { name: "summary", text: page.summary },
    { name: "body", text: page.body }
];

Everything else in the scanner stays the same. The body gets a source fingerprint and becomes missing or stale under the same rules as the short fields. pendingForPage() will now return it without any changes. The short-field service from part three deliberately rejects body. I’ll give long text its own service, using the generateStructured() method already added to NativeTranslationModel.cfc.

Create components/LongTextTranslationService.cfc:

    public LongTextTranslationService function init(
        required any model,

The splitter prefers a blank line within the next 800 characters. If there isn’t one, it backs up to whitespace. It keeps the whitespace at each split so I can reassemble the translated pieces in order. If it encounters an unbroken token longer than the limit, it stops rather than cutting through a web address or placeholder and hoping the pieces reconcile in therapy.

Eight hundred characters is a demonstration limit, not a universal model limit. Characters and model tokens aren’t interchangeable. The 20,000-character and 30-request limits also put a ceiling on cost and runtime; tune them for your provider and your application.

Each request carries the same application-approved glossary because the chunks are independent. I’m not relying on the model remembering what it called “community” three requests ago. ColdFusion’s structured Agent() request gives me a chunk number and translated text; the code then checks the number, length, markup, placeholders and web addresses. That still can’t prove the translation is good. A glossary helps consistency, but the review step in part five remains employed.

I can test the splitter and the rejection path without making a provider call:

<cfscript>
    sourceText =
        repeatString( "Hello, {firstName}. ", 55 ) &
        chr( 10 ) & chr( 10 ) &
        repeatString( "Find local events in your community. ", 30 );

    item = {
        field_name: "body",
        source_locale: "en-CA",
        target_locale: "fr-CA",
        source_text: sourceText,
        source_hash: repeatString( "a", 64 ),

    };

    fakeModel = {

            return serializeJSON( {
                chunk_number: input.chunk_number,
                translated_text: "FR: " & input.source_text

    ) {
        throw( message="The chunks were not assembled." );
    }

    badModel = {
        generateStructured: function( required struct request ) {
            var input = deserializeJSON( arguments.request.USERMESSAGE.MESSAGE );

            return serializeJSON( {

        }
    };

    rejected = false;

    try {

        rejected = compareNoCase( error.type, "Translation.InvalidResponse" ) == 0;

</cfscript>

The fake model’s FR: prefix is, obviously, not French. This test checks my chunking and validation code, not my fake model’s linguistic gifts. I’m confident it could disappoint readers in at least two official languages.

To exercise the real model with the sample page from part two, give that page a body:

UPDATE site_page
SET body =
    repeat('Find a local event near {firstName}. ', 30) ||
    E'\n\n' ||
    repeat('Meet community members and share ideas. ', 30)
WHERE
    site_id = '11111111-1111-4111-8111-111111111111'
    AND id = '22222222-2222-4222-8222-222222222222';

Then use a local or protected diagnostic page to route the short fields and body to their respective services:

<cfscript>
    inventory = new components.TranslationInventory( "translationDemo" );

    siteId = "11111111-1111-4111-8111-111111111111";
    pageId = "22222222-2222-4222-8222-222222222222";

    inventory.scanPage(
        siteId=siteId,
        pageId=pageId,
        targetLocale="fr-CA"
    );

    pending = inventory.pendingForPage(
        siteId=siteId,
        pageId=pageId,
        targetLocale="fr-CA"
    );

    model = new components.NativeTranslationModel();

    shortService = new components.TranslationBatchService( model );
    longService = new components.LongTextTranslationService(
        model,
        { community: "communauté" }
    );

    shortItems = [];
    candidates = [];

    for ( item in pending ) {
        if ( compare( item.field_name, "body" ) == 0 ) {
            arrayAppend( candidates, longService.translateItem( item ) );
        } else {
            arrayAppend( shortItems, item );
        }
    }

    for ( candidate in shortService.translatePending( shortItems ) ) {
        arrayAppend( candidates, candidate );
    }

    writeDump( candidates );
</cfscript>

Don’t put that work in a public Save request. A long body may require many sequential provider calls, and a browser request is a poor place to spend that time. Run the demonstration in a protected environment; the eventual production version belongs in a background job.

The result is still a candidate, carrying the source fingerprint from the inventory. If the source changes while those model calls are running, that fingerprint will let me refuse an obsolete save. Next, I’ll save candidates as drafts, give a person a chance to review them, and make sure “generated” never quietly becomes “published.”
